Datacenter, residential and mobile proxies are distinguished by one thing: who owns the IP address. A datacenter IP is registered to a hosting company; a residential IP is issued by a consumer ISP to a household; a mobile IP belongs to a cellular carrier and is shared by many phones at once. Every practical difference — trust, speed, price, how bans behave — follows from that origin. This guide lays the three out side by side, then gives you a decision table.
Why IP origin decides everything
Every IP address on the internet is registered to an organisation, and that registration is public. Anti-bot systems and fraud filters look it up in a fraction of a millisecond. If the owner is Amazon Web Services or Hetzner, the request is almost certainly automated — real people do not browse from a server rack. If the owner is Comcast or Deutsche Telekom, it looks like a household. If it is Vodafone or T-Mobile, it looks like a phone.
The site does not know whether you are a bot. It knows how likely a bot is, given the neighbourhood the IP lives in. Proxy types are, in effect, neighbourhoods with different reputations — and different rents.
Datacenter proxies
IPs leased in bulk from cloud and hosting providers and served from powerful machines with fat network pipes.
- Speed: the fastest option by far — sub-10 ms added latency within the same region, gigabit throughput.
- Price: the cheapest; typically billed per IP per month, unlimited traffic.
- Availability: effectively unlimited; providers hold hundreds of thousands.
- Trust: the lowest. Whole ranges are catalogued as “hosting” and many sites throttle or challenge them by default. Once one IP in a subnet is banned, neighbours are often banned pre-emptively.

Residential proxies
IPs that a home ISP has assigned to a real subscriber. Providers obtain access to them through peer-to-peer SDKs bundled in apps, through paid opt-in networks, or by leasing from ISPs directly (the last variety is often sold separately as ISP proxies, see below).
- Speed: moderate. Traffic really passes through a home connection, so expect 50–300 ms extra latency and throughput limited by that household's plan.
- Price: mid-to-high; almost always billed per gigabyte of traffic, which makes bandwidth-heavy tasks expensive.
- Availability: pools of millions of IPs, but each individual IP is only online while the host device is; sessions are inherently less stable.
- Trust: high. The IP is genuinely a household's, in a genuine consumer range, with genuine history. Sites cannot block residential ranges wholesale without locking out their own users.
Good for: targets with serious anti-bot protection — large e-commerce, travel, sneaker and ticket sites, social platforms — and any task where the request must look like a specific real person in a specific place: ad verification, localised SERP checks, geo-restricted content.
A note on ISP (static residential) proxies
An ISP proxy is a residential IP that the provider hosts on its own servers with the ISP's cooperation. You get residential-grade reputation with datacenter-grade speed and a static IP that does not disappear when someone turns off their laptop. They cost more than datacenter and are less numerous than rotating residential, but for “one trusted static IP per account” they are frequently the best tool. We cover them in depth separately.
Mobile proxies
IPs from cellular carriers, delivered through real SIM cards in modems or phones. The defining technical fact is carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT): a mobile operator has far fewer public IPv4 addresses than subscribers, so hundreds or thousands of phones share each public IP at any moment.
- Speed: the slowest and most variable — it depends on cell coverage, and 4G/5G latency of 40–150 ms is normal.
- Price: the highest, usually per port (one modem/SIM) per month or per gigabyte.
- Availability: the smallest pools; a provider's inventory is bounded by physical SIMs and modems.
- Trust: the highest. Because thousands of legitimate users sit behind the same IP, a site that bans it inflicts collateral damage on real customers — so most sites do not ban mobile IPs, they rate-limit and look elsewhere for signals. Rotation is often free and instant: reconnecting the modem yields a new IP from the carrier's pool.

A useful rule of thumb: start with the cheapest type the target tolerates, and move up only when you measure blocks. Paying mobile prices to scrape a site that does not care about datacenter IPs is the most common way to overspend.
Common misconceptions
- “Residential means undetectable.” The IP is undetectable as a proxy; your browser fingerprint, cookies and behaviour are unchanged. Sites that fingerprint will still link your sessions.
- “Mobile is always better.” For a desktop e-commerce site, a stream of mobile IPs with a desktop User-Agent is itself an anomaly. Match the IP type to what a real user of that platform would have.
- “Datacenter is dead.” Most of the internet does not run enterprise anti-bot. For APIs, small sites and your own infrastructure, datacenter remains the rational default.
- “A bigger pool is always better.” A pool of 50 million residential IPs is worth little if the ones you receive have been hammered by other customers on the same target minutes ago. Ask providers about pool freshness per target, not just size.

Which proxy type is the most anonymous?
Mobile, then residential, then datacenter — measured by how hard it is for a site to tell the traffic is proxied by IP alone. But “anonymous” also depends on your browser and habits; see our anonymity-focused ranking.
Why are residential proxies billed per gigabyte?
Because the provider is paying for someone else's home bandwidth (directly or through an SDK partnership) and has no fixed pipe to amortise. Datacenter proxies run on the provider's own servers, so unlimited-traffic pricing works there.
What is the difference between residential and ISP proxies?
Both use ISP-registered IPs. A residential proxy routes through a real household device and rotates as devices come and go; an ISP proxy hosts a residential-registered IP on the provider's own server, so it is static and fast. ISP proxies are the middle ground: residential trust, datacenter behaviour.
Can I use mobile proxies for desktop sites?
You can, and for account safety on some platforms it is worth it. But be consistent: if the IP says “phone on 4G” and the browser says “Windows desktop with a 27-inch monitor,” sophisticated anti-fraud will notice the mismatch.
How many IPs do I need?
Rule of thumb for scraping: enough that no single IP exceeds the target's per-IP rate limit at your desired throughput. For accounts: one stable IP per account, never shared between accounts on the same platform.
